A North Carolina man in his 80s is in critical condition after being butted by a bull who escaped from his pasture. The Fayetteville Observer reported an Angus bull escaped Monday and the man was trying to coax the animal back behind the gate.

A New Hanover County resident has been notified of a possible rabies exposure after another rabid raccoon was found last week. Animal Control Services confirmed the resident’s dog fought and killed the raccoon Thursday evening. The dog was current on its rabies vaccination.

Many area animal shelters are filled to the brim with animals who need homes. Often, these dogs and cats remain unadopted and eventually may have to be put down in order to make room for the other animals. That's where a local organization steps in to help.

Just as the cold has been affecting many of us this season, it's also effecting the turtle populations off the coast of North Carolina. The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center at Topsail Island has heaters and blankets for sea turtles that have been cold-stunned.

Old man winter has made an early visit to the Cape Fear. That's bad news for the Pender County Animal Shelter, where there are too many dogs outside and not enough houses to keep them out of the cold.

A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in downtown Wilmington. Luckily, no people were hurt in the fire and firefighters managed to save two kittens that nearly died in the house.
