There will be no possum drop in Brasstown this New Year's Eve if a decision by an administrative law judge stands.
In a ruling issued Tuesday, Judge Fred Morrison said North Carolina law prohibits citizens from using wild animals for pets or amusement.

Folks on Bald Head Island got quite a surprise on the beach today: a dead, six-foot long shark.

A one-year-old Quarter horse colt that died in Brunswick County was confirmed as the 19th Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) positive horse in North Carolina for 2012 according to county health officials. North Carolina has experienced an active West Nile virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) activity this year.

State health officials say animal contact is a likely source of an E. coli outbreak linked to the Cleveland County Fair.
A statement from the NC Department of Health and Human Services on Friday said 64 children and 42 adults have been affected by this outbreak.
