A new charter school is ready to open this fall in Carolina Beach.
Today Island Montessori Charter started accepting applications from families in New Hanover and the surrounding counties a day after the state approved its request to be a charter school.

The application passed its initial review yesterday by a sub-committee; however, when the application came before the entire board today, it was denied with the primary reason being concerns about the design of the governance of the proposed charter school board.

D.C. Virgo Middle School is closed this school year, but Tuesday night the New Hanover County School Board discussed options to reopen the school. The main option the school system is considering is opening D.C. Virgo back up as a charter school.
