Family and friends gathered in Whiteville today to pay final respects to football great Chester McGlockton. The 42-year-old died last week in California, where he was an assistant coach at Stanford University.

One of the best football players in the history of the Cape Fear region has died. Whiteville High School alum and former NFL Pro Bowler Chester McGlockton is dead at the age of 42. He died overnight in California.

Two undefeated teams went toe to toe on Wednesday night in Wilmington with all the marbles on the line. WWAY 5th Quarter co-host Trot Nixon attended the title contest between Trask Middle School and Roland-Grise Middle School. Nixon said it was the best football game he'd seen all season.

Before he was named to the NFL's 1960s All-Decade Team, before playing 18 seasons with the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles and before he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, Sonny Jurgensen started his gridiron career as a quarterback for the New Hanover High School Wildcats.

Now that the NFL lockout is over teams are allowed to come to terms with undrafted free agents. Former North Brunswick Scorpion receiver Owen Spencer is included on this list. In fact he's headed to Nashville in order to be a Tennessee Titan.
