Even though it's late June most high school athletes are not spending all of the waking hours at the beach surfing or swimming. If they want playing time on the basketball court this winter they're more than likely playing hoops even though it's the start of the high school basketball season is still five months away.

New Hanover and Hoggard don't meet very often in the state playoffs, but that happened Wednesday night in girls high school soccer. Hoggard won both regular season games, but it was lose and go home in this third round playoff matchup.

The Hoggard baseball team won the Mideastern Conference, earning the one seed in the state playoffs. The Vikings hosted Cape Fear, a wild card out of the Mid-South Conference in round one.
Ashley was the two seed, also earning a home game in round one.

While the UNCW baseball team is looking ahead to postseason play, high school lacrosse playoff action is underway. The Hoggard boys and girls teams were both in action on Tuesday, but only one advanced.

Rain on Tuesday forced the biggest high school tennis match of the season to date in Wilmington to be played on Wednesday. Hoggard has five consecutive conference titles, but their hold on the streak was in jeopardy due to a surging New Hanover squad.
