videoWe had our sports cameras out and about on Tuesday. We checked out the signing day ceremony at Laney, plus three different athletic events involving Ashley and Hoggard. On top of that we showcased the boys high school golf championship for New Hanover County on Tuesday that featured Laney, Hoggard, Ashley, New Hanover, Cape Fear Academy and Wilmington Christian.

South Columbus football player dies; Hoggard hoopster signs letter of intent

videoThe South Columbus High School community is mourning the loss of running back Cephus McGill. The sophomore died Sunday night. Hoggard senior basketball standout Trevor Singleton has signed on the dotted line to play college basketball. UNCW's Steven Linkous and Mat Batts have been recognized by the CAA for their performance on the baseball field over the weekend. Plus more

videoRain has caused organizers to shift days and times of the Ashley Spring Break Baseball Tournament. Both teams continue to show support of the Newsome family by wearing their 'Newsome Strong' jerseys. New Hanover High School won this afternoon, but Hoggard High School fell into the loser's bracket this evening.

videoT.J. Warren, Leslie McDonald and Andre Dawkins had more than their fair share of impressive basketball plays in Burgaw on Thursday night. It was Warren's first professional game since declaring himself eligible for the NBA Draft. We had high school baseball action on Thursday. This included the New Hanover-Hoggard showdown and Wallace-Rose vs. Trask. Plus more!

WWAY's Wednesday night sports - April 9; Ashley baseball & softball takes flight

videoThe Screaming Eagles are looking fantastic this season in both baseball and softball. We checked out action on Wednesday from Ashley involving Topsail and Ashley High. In college baseball UNCW and East Carolina both won. In fact the Pirates picked up a non-conference victory against NC State.

videoThe UNCW baseball team shutout Campbell on Tuesday night. We were there to check that out. We also stopped by the Laney-South Brunswick baseball game and Hoggard-New Hanover lacrosse. ACC basketball player of the year T.J. Warren is coming to Burgaw this week. We have the details!

Barth medically cleared for Tampa Bay

videoConnor Barth missed the entire NFL 2013 season after suffering a torn Achilles tendon while playing in a charity basketball game in Wilmington. Barth’s injury was the first in a series of unfortunate events for Tampa Bay kickers last season. The former Hoggard kicker has now been medically cleared to play.

Former Hoggard punter still getting a kick at NC State

videoPunters typically don't get as much respect and notoriety as other players on a football team, but when you need to punt it sure helps to have a good one. Hoggard graduate Wil Baumann is the NC State punter. WWAY recently made the trip to Raleigh in order to catch up with Baumann. He currently ranks third in school history in career punts with one more season left of eligibility.
