The Atlantic Coast Conference has granted North Carolina place-kicker Casey Barth a medical hardship waiver for the 2011 season. That means the Wilmington native gets a fifth year of eligibility in 2012.

This will be a light week for hoops in our region, but there will be plenty of basketball action on Monday afternoon at Union High School in Sampson County. Three Wilmington boys basketball teams will be competing.

UNCW committed a season high 28 turnovers on Saturday night against VCU. The Seahawks couldn't handle the pressure from the Rams. In high school hoops Ashley survived the pressure of a competitive game on the road against South View. Donnell Holmes found himself in a pressure cooker on Saturday, but the Ivanhoe native couldn't come up with the decision he wanted.

Hoggard and Ashley were both scheduled to play at Cameron Indoor Stadium later this month in a showcase high school basketball event in Durham. The NCAA has stepped in, though. The NCAA has declared the "Clash at Cameron" to be a non-scholastic event.

Charlotte Providence won its fifth North Carolina High School Athletic Association volleyball championship in convincing fashion on Saturday as the Panthers rolled to a straight-set victory over Wilmington Hoggard in the 4-A final at Reynolds Coliseum.

A former high school football star is in trouble with the law once again. Records show Wilimington Police booked Shawn Sidbury into the New Hanover County Jail yesterday. He is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and first degree burglary.
