This Day in NC History: Hurricane Hazel makes landfall

On October 15, 1954, Hurricane Hazel made landfall at Long Beach. The storm’s arrival in North Carolina occurred on a full moon high tide, maximizing impact of the storm surge on the barrier beaches of Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle, Holden Beach, Long Beach, Carolina Beach, Wrightsville Beach and Topsail Island.

NOAA Slightly Ups its Hurricane Season Forecast

NOAA now forecasts 12-17 named storms for the 2012 season, with 6-8 becoming hurricanes. So far, 6 named storms have formed in the Atlantic.

STORMTRACK 3: Slow-moving Debby is weaker, will move into the Atlantic this week

Right now, the StormTrack 3 Weather Team does not expect any direct impacts from Debby as she moves into the Atlantic this week. Currently, the storm is continues to bring rain to Florida.

UPDATE: NWS radar up and running; major upgrade complete

video The upgrade is now finished, and the National Weather Service's radar in Shallotte is now state of the art. The new dual-polarization data should give meteorologists a better view of storms.
