Jonathan BarfieldCandidate Interview: Jonathan Barfield Jonathan Barfield is a second-generation New Hanover County commissioner. His father served on the board for 12 years. Barfield hopes to follow in his father's footsteps, which would start by being elected to a second term in office. Barfield serves on numerous boards and committees to help stay involved in the community. He sat down with us to share this thoughts on a proposed baseball stadium as well as the need for more jobs in Wilmington. After weeks of public and even national outrage, New Hanover County Commissioners have voted in favor of nearly $9,000 in family planning funding. Last month, the board unanimously voted against accepting the money.

Just days after New Hanover County Commissioners voted against state funding for contraceptives, the response has been incredible. A few hundred people came to Riverfront Park in downtown Wilmington Thursday in protest of the vote.

Governor Bev Perdue’s announcement last month was a shock to many, sparking an entirely new political ball game in North Carolina. Brian Berger has been released from jail after being back behind bars Friday. The New Hanover County Commissioner was arrested Friday morning after he failed to appear in court. Berger is no stranger to running behind schedule, but Friday there was a serious price to pay for his tardiness.

It's Fire Prevention Week and to start it off, the Wilmington Fire Department and New Hanover County Fire Rescue are targeting senior citizens in their effort to provide safety information. Firefighters are delivering Meals on Wheels all week, talking to senior residents about fire safety and checking their smoke detectors.
