One of the five Leland Police officers suspended last week has quit. Leland Town Manager David Hollis says Deputy Police Chief Karl Smith resigned effective this morning. Smith had been suspended with pay Friday while an internal investigation continues.

The Leland Police Department has fixed problems regulators found with its training and records.
The police department released a letter today sent by North Carolina Department of Justice Criminal Justice Standards Division. The letter dated February 20 thanks the Leland Police Department for "correcting the deficiencies identified in the Field Audit Results report dated November 01, 2011."

Best I can tell, Leland Police Chief Tim Jayne has a free ticket to ride. The man has broken a multitude of policies and laws, yet he skates by with not a slap-on-the-wrist, but more like a light tap.
