To an outsider watching Pop Herring's basketball tryout in November 1978, it would not have been obvious that the gym at Laney High held a player destined to become the greatest in the universe. He was still Mike Jordan then, not Michael Jordan, just another sophomore guard among 50 eager boys competing for 15 spots on the varsity and 15 more on the junior varsity.

On Thursday we led off our 11pm sportscast with video from Charlotte showing Michael Jordan practicing with the NBA Charlotte Bobcats. The Wilmington native wasn't hard to spot. MJ wore a bright orange tank top. Clearly he was the center of attention despite the fact some of the Bobcats are half his age.

For the second year in a row, the induction ceremony at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Massachusetts tonight will have a big connection to the Port City. New UNCW women's basketball coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, the WNBA's first superstar, is among the new members being enshrined. Wilmington's Michael Jordan, who entered the Hall last year, will be enshrined again as part of the 1992 Olympic "Dream Team."

The basketball career that started in a New Hanover County driveway and went all the way to the Basketball Hall of Fame now moves to the owners box. The NBA Board of Governors has unanimously approved Michael Jordan's bid to buy a controlling interest in the Charlotte Bobcats.
