When reached by phone this morning, Mayor Eulis Willis said the council has not yet talked about the penalty, but it does have the town's lawyer working on it.

The town of Navassa is no stranger to conflict, and that continued Tuesday night during an emergency town council meeting. The council met to discuss a personnel issue and FEMA grant money for Hurricane Irene damage, but residents who were there had a lot more to talk about.

The NC Division of Public Health is conducting a public health assessment for the Kerr-McGee Chemical Corporation National Priorities List site in Navassa, Brunswick County. The final draft report is available for public review and comment through July 25.

Some private property owners in Navassa say their signatures were forged on a deed to grant the town access to their property for water and sewer improvements. Because Mayor Eulis Willis was in charge of that project, he is under a cloud of suspicion.
