An assistant football coach at Hoggard High School has been arrested after an incident at the school last week. The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office has charged Joseph Clinton Brown Jr. with five counts of simple assault and one count of assault with a deadly weapon.

According to the group NC Fear Free Education, the family of a child enrolled in the school district filed a 98-page complaint yesterday with the Office of Civil Rights division of the US Department of Education.

A student from Rachel Freeman School of Engineering died this morning after arriving at school. Wilmington Police Department spokesman Det. Kevin Smith said the eight-year-old girl was unresponsive when a school bus for special needs students arrived at the school.

The controversy over New Hanover County Schools' use of seclusion rooms is now the subjection of a federal investigation.
The Department of Education's Civil Rights Office is looking into a claim that seclusion rooms are only being used on students with disabilities.

D.C. Virgo Middle School will once again open its doors, but not in a way administrators planned. Recently, the state denied the school's application for charter status, so the school will be a public school, with a twist.

The New Hanover County Science Fair was held on Thursday, January 26, 2012 on the campus of Murray Middle School. Nearly two hundred students in grades 3-12 participated.

More New Hanover County students are staying in school instead of dropping out. The school district says the 23.4 percent decrease in the overall dropout rate is a big step in the right direction.
