Yesterday Dr. Derrick Hickey asked the school board if they think they have failed the students of New Hanover County. Hickey says this was part of a spirited debate that started over a one-percent increase in teacher bonuses.

New Hanover County Commissioners passed the FY2011-2012 budget today with a few tweaks, including a one percent merit pay increase for county employees. Commissioners also increased the budget for new hanover county schools by $1 million.

Funding for education was one of the main issues discussed during the New Hanover County Commission meeting Monday night. Tim Markley, the New Hanover County Schools superintendent, requested $1 million for their operating budget, the same amount that was allotted last year.

Even though lights were on inside of Robin Lamberty's home, no one would come to the door. Neighbors seemed curious of our presence so we took our cameras across the street. There we found Lamberty's friend and neighbor, John Swift.
