A Laney High School teacher was surprised this morning with a big honor. Tears filled Melissa Gillespie's eyes as she walked into the library, which was jam-packed with friends, family, coworkers and students. New Hanover and Brunswick County Schools should soon get state money for more resource officers. It's part of $7 million legislators allocated in this year's state budget. Counties must match one dollar for every two from the state. Full story...

Apparently New Hanover County teachers can still wear "Red for Ed" shirts at school. That's a reversal from less than two weeks ago when teachers were informed they could wear red, but could not wear the message "Red for Ed," which the school board said was a political statement not allowed under district policy.
