WWAY’s Friday night sports segment featured the Wilmington Sea Dawgs semi-pro basketball team at home against Big Texas. We also went to Brooks Field to check out UNCW against Hofstra in a battle of the top two teams in the CAA. New Hanover High School will be well represented in Charlotte on Saturday at the 11th Annual Jordan Brand Classic. The showcase event will be held at the home of the NBA Charlotte Bobcats. Wildcat senior Kadeem Allen will play on the NC East Regional team. Wildcat head coach Kirk Angel and Millbrook coach Scott McInnis will be the co-coaches of Allen's squad. Full story...

On Tuesday night the New Hanover County School Board recognized the New Hanover boys basketball team for winning the 4-A state championship in high school basketball. WWAY was there for that. New Hanover senior Kadeem Allen tied Rodney Purvis for the most votes on the AP all-state boys basketball team on Thursday, but Purvis edged out Kadeem Allen on Saturday for the NC player of the year award. Full story...

The Friday night sports segment featured UNC Wilmington baseball against Old Dominion at Brooks Field. The Seahawks beat the Monarchs 10-4. We also traveled to Hampstead to check out the undefeated Topsail softball team against Swansboro. The Wilmington Sea Dawgs will open their season on Sunday at the Schwartz Center in downtown Wilmington. Full story...

New Hanover basketball coach Kirk Angel has been named the Associated Press high school coach of the year for boys basketball. Angel's team recently captured the state 4-A championship. The Wildcats finished the 2011-2012 season with a 30-1 record. This is the first time a Wilmington coach has been awarded the AP coach of the year recognition. Full story...

Thursday night sports featured three Tar Heel basketball players who have declared for the NBA Draft next season. We also recognized New Hanover senior guard Kadeem Allen for being named to the All-State squad by the Associated Press. The New Hanover Wildcats captured the state title in 4-A basketball on Saturday night with a 67-56 victory over West Charlotte. The rich tradition continues. It's the 14th state title for the Wildcats in basketball. That's the most for any high school in North Carolina. Full story...
