A fair number of high school basketball teams opened the season on Tuesday night. We had game action involving Ashley, Cape Fear Academy and Wilmington Christian Academy. In fact Ashley boys head basketball coach Webster Guthrie picked up a win in his first game as the head coach of the Screaming Eagles. The North Brunswick Scorpions finished the 2014 regular season with a 6-5 record after winning their last two games in convincing fashion. In the regular season finale the Scorpions defeated East Duplin 26-7. We recognized North Brunswick on Wednesday with the WWAY Farm Bureau Insurance at Mayfaire Team of the Week award. Thanks to a bit of creative editing a pair of New Hanover soccer players danced backwards on our sportscast on Monday night on WWAY. The UNCW women's soccer team didn't dance on Monday, but the Seahawks did shutout Coastal Carolina. Former Ashley soccer standout Stanley Broaden scored twice for Appalachian State on Monday. Friday's 5th Quarter was action packed despite the fact we kept our eye on the weather all night long. The first half of the Hoggard game was clearly a spectator's delight. It was a mixture of dynamic plays combined with a bit of intrigue. We have a lengthy recap of the Hoggard game. Unfortunately, it'll go down as a no contest. We had high school soccer action from Bladen County on Tuesday night on WWAY between East Bladen and North Brunswick. The Eagles have only played six times this season. Four of the games ended in a deadlock. A handful of area football teams are ranked in the first AP high school football poll this season. Plus more! Full story...

The Charlotte Hornets released their upcoming schedule on Wednesday. LeBron James will only make one appearance this season in Charlotte. North Brunswick High School has been added to the BB&T Jamboree lineup next month at Legion Stadium. This means all three high schools in Brunswick County will be included along with the four high schools from New Hanover County, Whiteville, South Columbus and Wallace-Rose Hill in the high school football showcase.
