The legislature required the Department of Transportation to raise more revenue from ferry riders, but a recent executive order by the governor has temporarily stopped that plan. People in southport are still worried about the possibility of a hike.

North Carolina legislators are considering budget cuts that might lead the state to charge to ride four ferries that are currently free and double the price on three others.

The NC Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division will be running an abbreviated schedule at its Southport-Fort Fisher route today and Wednesday to perform annual maintenance to the ferry ramps.
