We had our sports cameras out and about on Tuesday night. The Hoggard boys basketball team used a handful of slam dunks to their advantage in the league opener against Topsail. The West Brunswick boys team held off a pesky Laney squad. The game was tied late in regulation until Ty Hill nailed a shot from behind the arc to lead the Trojans to a 69-66 victory. The first round of the soccer playoffs concluded on Wednesday night all around the state. The majority of our local squads won. Winners advance to the second round of the state playoffs later this week. Plus, we checked in with former UNCW Seahawk basketball standout Adam Smith on Wednesday. Former South Columbus football standout Ethan Farmer is trying to make the most out of his senior season for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Farmer and the Tar Heels are currently undefeated. In fact the Heels will be facing in-state foe East Carolina this weekend. On Wednesday Farmer provided his thoughts on the upcoming ECU-UNC game. Plus we had New Hanover-Topsail soccer and more! For some reason there's a completely different feeling in the air when area high school football teams play on a Monday. Regardless, Hoggard defeated South Columbus with relative ease on Monday night. Topsail had to come from behind to beat Trask. Full story...

The 2014 high school football regular season is underway. On Friday we had coverage from several games. We expected to have a full slate, but the weather interfered with those plans. Some games were completed. Some started, but will need to be resumed. Some games never started. Full story...

Monday marked the first day high school football teams could scrimmage other schools before the upcoming season. We went to the scrimmage in Hampstead in order to check out the Topsail Pirates and head coach Wayne Inman. Topsail hosted the East Columbus Gators. Day one of the Fred Lynch Invitational is complete. Six different venues are being used in New Hanover County to showcase this three day high school basketball summer event. Eight players with local ties were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft over the weekend. We have a detailed report on those selections.
