Hoggard High graduate Derek Brunson stepped back into the octagon on Wednesday for his third UFC fight. UNC Study: Fast food not the major cause of rising childhood obesity rates

For several years, many have been quick to attribute rising fast-food consumption as the major factor causing rapid increases in childhood obesity. Now researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill report that fast-food consumption is simply a byproduct of a much bigger problem: poor all-day-long dietary habits that originate in children’s homes.

videoHoggard and New Hanover both had dominant performances in boys basketball action on Tuesday night. Hoggard cooled off Ashley while New Hanover clubbed Laney. Weekend sports update

The season is over for the Carolina Panthers. The San Francisco 49ers advance in the playoffs. WWAY's Chasity Melvin was honored in Cary on Saturday by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association for being of the best athletes in the state. Saturday was the first day Duke, North Carolina & NC State all lost on the same day since 1996 in men's basketball. Both UNC Wilmington basketball teams continued their losing streaks this weekend. videoUNCW assistant basketball coach Eddie Biedenbach has deep roots to Asheville and Raleigh. As it turns out Biedenbach will be inducted into the NC Sports Hall of Fame in Raleigh later this year. Jones Angell is the "Voice of the Tar Heels." We profiled Angell on our sports segment on Monday night. ACC fans it's time to celebrate! Florida State wins the national championship for college football.

Tar Heels spoil Buzz's return to Chapel Hill

videoIn a New Year's Eve showdown in Chapel Hill the North Carolina Tar Heels shot 62 percent in the second half against UNC Wilmington to claim their third straight triumph. UNC improves to 10-3 overall. UNCW drops to 6-9 after the Seahawks final non-conference game of the season.
