There will be two football jamborees in our region on Friday: the BB&T Jamboree in Wilmington and the Buddy Burney Jamboree in Bladen County. Wilmington's Cari Blalock finished in 4th place at the US Open Swimming Championships on Thursday. This was the first day of official high school football practice all across the state. The Wilmington Sharks clinched a playoff spot of Thursday. On Tuesday the North Brunswick Scorpions advanced in the state baseball playoffs. Trask advanced in the softball playoffs. Ashley High has a new head basketball coach. NC State football coach Dave Doeren rolled into Wilmington to meet with the Wilmington Wolfpack Club. UNCW racked up at the CAA baseball awards banquet. The Bobcats will be the Hornets soon. On Thursday Hoggard football coaches hosted a NFL Draft get together for former Hoggard Vikings football standout Jonathan Cooper. The UNC Tar Heel offensive guard was selected with the seventh overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals. The Hoggard boys basketball team will be in the Mideastern Conference championship game for the fifth year in a row. It'll be the Vikings vs. the New Hanover Wildcats on Friday. In the Waccamaw Conference slowing the game down worked for the West Brunswick boys. They'll be in the finals on Friday. The East Bladen girls knocked off arch-rival West Bladen on Friday. Plus more! The streak is over. West Bladen had a 17 game winning streak over East Bladen in boys basketball until Tuesday night. East Bladen's Hastin McGill hit the game winner to give East Bladen a 46-44 win. It was the first victory for East Bladen over West Bladen since 2005. Pender defeated Trask in boys hoops. Wake Forest edged NC State. The Carolina Hurricanes lost their home opener. Full story...

Russell Dove is the new head football coach at West Bladen High School. Dove replaces Joe Salas who recently left West Bladen in order to take over the football program at Lumberton High School. Rasheed Brown of Trask was the frontrunner for WWAY's play of the night with a sensational slam dunk in the second quarter for Trask. It didn't end up being the play of the night though. Ashley's T.J. Williams ended up with that honor after he slammed home a dunk at the buzzer to give Ashley a one point win over New Hanover. On Friday we featured action from seven different venues with eleven games in all on WWAY's Full Court Press. Full story...
