The real meaning of the 4th of July was on display this morning at Wilmington National Cemetery. That's where the New Hanover County Veterans Council held its annual Independence Day Ceremony.

More than 340,000 wreaths are on the move right now, all part of Wreaths Across America. Each year the organization coordinates hundreds of wreath-laying ceremonies on the second Saturday of December to honor and remember those who have served our country.

Last month a historical marker was unveiled outside Wilmington National Cemetery to honor the hundreds of US Colored Troops buried in the Port City. Next week the man behind that marker will be honored for his efforts.

On this Memorial Day hundreds of people visited Wilmington National Cemetery to honor the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The ceremony specifically honored the 572 veterans in our area who died since last Memorial Day.

Local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts woke up bright and early this weekend to decorate over five thousand head stones to get them ready for Memorial Day. One American flag was planted on each soldier’s gravesite at Wilmington National Cemetery on Market Street.
