The Wilmington Police Department is investigating the death of a 23-year-old Wilmington man on Sunday morning as a homicide, according to a statement from a department spokesperson.

Wilmington Police are investigating a murder after the second shooting on the same downtown street this week. It's the first murder of the year in the Port City. The shooting took place in the 800 block of Rankin Street just after 5 a.m.

Last call downtown was the start of problems for Wilmington Police this holiday weekend. Officers working downtown encountered large crowds and responded to several fights when bars closed at 2 a.m. Saturday.
