Local health departments say they were not affected by this week's recall of the H1N1 vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are recalling 800,000 doses in pre-filled syringes intended for young children, ages 6 months to almost three years. The doses in question initially passed potency tests, but more recent tests of remaining samples indicate their effectiveness has faded. Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, and Pender County health departments said they do not have, nor did they distribute any of the vaccines in question. Health officials said it is not clear how many doses have already been given, but they do not think children need to be re-vaccinated. Brunswick County helps kids stay swine flu-free Brunswick County health officials are making an extra effort to keep kids swine flu-free. Nurses are packing "goodie" bags for every elementary school kid in Brunswick County. The bags include hand sanitizer, tissues, and a pamphlet on how to properly wash your hands. They are hoping these supplies will help reduce the spread of germs. “The H1N1 virus is affecting kids mainly, kids and young adults, so we are doing everything we can to prevent the spread of the flu virus," said nurse Kimborli Adams. By Thursday, all kids in the Brunswick County school system will have been offered the seasonal flu and H1N1 vaccines.

My child came home from

My child came home from school saying they learned to cough and sneeze into their elbow with Germy Wormie, and I was totally taken aback. I always covered with my hands. But I went to the website and now I get it, hands touch, elbows don't!! Kids can touch 300 surfaces in 1/2 hour and they hate to wash their hands. This is a simple thing that can make a huge difference. There is also an entertaining DVD that teaches them in a fun way the elbow cough, as well as other important hygiene habits.
