No sign of road ahead

READ MORE: No sign of road ahead

The I-40 sign marking the 2,500 mile drive to the end of the road in California was noticeably absent today. Last night thieves stole the Wilmington landmark that connects our country's coasts, and it's not the first time. “I have my picture taken with it and I’ve also taken my picture at the other end of I –40,” said Mike Gunther. It is 2,554 miles from end to end. I-40 West starts in Wilmington and ends on the other side of the country in Barstow, California. Heading out of town, there's usually a sign letting drivers know how far they have to go. “It was installed at the completion of i-40 to mark the end points here and in California around the summer of 1991,” said Ben Hughes of the NC Department of Transportation. Since then the sign has been stolen four times, the latest coming Thursday night. “I think that it's bad because the children that ride on that road can see that we connect from coast to coast, and now it's not there,” said Pat Butler. Each time it's stolen, it costs the department of transportation about $600 to replace the sign. Drivers were worried this time it wouldn't be replaced. “We've had a number of e-mails, just today, expressing interest for the sign to be replaced and have it reinstalled. There was a lot of people concerned that wouldn't be done,” Hughes said. Luckily engineers found an extra sign in storage, so DOT decided to replace the landmark after all. “It's a unique sign that you don't see everyday and it's a good thing to have out there,” Hughes said. Hughes asked would-be thieves to leave the new sign alone. He says the DOT might not be able to replace it next time. If you want a souvenir, a better idea is to pull over and take a picture with the sign. No word yet on when the sign will be replaced.

Hooker Rd.

Same thing had been going on with the Hooker road sign off of Wrightsville. Then DOT got smart and replaced the metal sign with a concrete obelisk; hasn't been stolen since. Makes sense to just spend the cash on something they know will stay put; and it's a nice landmark anyway, it should be "memorialized."

THE

REAL CRIME...we need to investigate is WHY it costs us $600 to replace such a simple little sign!

sign on I40

Have DOT install the sign higher so it can not be taken unless someone use a real tall ladder. At least we can take pictures of it far off and we can still keep the sign up forever.

stolen sign

I think this news story is missing a very important part. "Anyone with information on the location of the stolen signs and/or suspsects please call law enforcement". $600 per sign, that has cost the tax payers over $2000 for those signs. Someone needs to pay for thier souvenirs. Just my 2 cents.....

Hey DOT, weld the bolts this

Hey DOT, weld the bolts this time. Can you say, duh?

Missing Sign

Looks like a field goal. GOOOAAALLL!!!

Where's your sign?

Andy: Barney do you know what happened to the Barstow Sign out on I-40? Barney: No Sheriff, can say that I do. Andy: You reckon ol' Ernest T's been around? Barney: Now Sheriff you know he can't read. Besides that, it sounds like something Ol' Rafe Hollister would do. I'll have Otis and Goober meet me at the Courthouse and we go find out what he up to. I bet he's gonna be suprized when we find his still and that sign. He pay for sure.

I40

How long does it take to steal this sign and no one saw anything? With all the gadgets available today there has to be a way to secure it where no one can remove it w/o sawing the poles off. I had signs stolen from my yard once including the street sign. When they where replaced I took a hammer and bent the bolts down so the washers couldnt be removed. Gee that was hard to do.

An idea

Install a traffic camera that just happens to include were the sign is located. Then if it is stolen we will have pictures of the mutt and hopefully a license plate.
