Pleasure Island makes final preparations

As the waves get bigger and stronger, home owners on Pleasure Island make final preparations to protect their homes.

Shannon Quinn, a Kure Beach resident said, "I cleaned up everything out of the yard, put it in storage so that it doesn't blow around and hit the house and we're going to board up some of the windows on the front of the house."

Tony Gonzalez, a Carolina Beach resident said, "We put sand bags on the bottom of the doors, board up the windows."

Boat owners are being pro-active as well.

"Tying up the lines getting all the electronics off of it, securing the outriggers the antennas,” said Jeff Peoples, a Carolina Beach boat owner.

As of Friday morning the Town of Carolina Beach has declared a state of emergency. To protect the area the Carolina Beach Lake has been drained to prevent flooding. Freeman Park, also known as the North End, has been closed as a precautionary measure. A voluntary evacuation has also been issued.

But even with all the preparations, home owners still worry about the possible storm damage.

"Concerned about flooding and just things getting blown around in the wind,” said Shannon Quinn.

But until the storm is over, they can only wait and hope.
