Coping with wife's cancer, Edwards opens up about son he lost

READ MORE:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- As John Edwards tries to explain how he'll cope with the recurrence of his wife's cancer, he is beginning to open up about the death of his teenage son.

The discussion began last Thursday when John and Elizabeth Edwards announced her breast cancer had spread to her bone. It continued Saturday when Edwards was asked if he could balance the campaign and her diagnosis.

Speaking at a forum in Las Vegas, he told the group that this isn't the first challenge he and his wife have been through.

Wade Edwards was 16 when he died, on the way to the family beach home when a gust of wind swept his Jeep off the highway.

A person close to the Edwardses says they're talking more openly about their experience with Wade's death because they believe it helps answer legitimate questions about how they will cope with Mrs. Edwards' cancer.
