The federal government plans to open a new court in Charlotte next month to handle illegal immigration cases in the Carolinas.
Judges will begin hearing cases November 4th. Cases from the region had been sent to Atlanta, but that court was bursting at the seams.
Officials say last year nearly 3,000 immigration cases were heard from North Carolina and almost 500 from South Carolina.
Immigration judges determine whether people charged with violating immigration laws are kicked out of the United States.
