WALLACE, N.C. (AP) -- A Wallace police officer is in jail on drug charges after an investigation that began last summer.
David Brown Jr. was arrested Tuesday and held in the Duplin County Jail under 200-thousand dollars bond. The SBI says he's charged with conspiracy to sell cocaine and marijuana, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery.
Police Chief Bobby Maready says the 27-year-old Brown was a five-year veteran of the department, where he worked as a road patrol deputy and wasn't involved in drug cases.
Maready said he was approached several months ago about the deputy's activities. The county prosecutor asked for the SBI investigation.
Maready said Brown was fired before he was charged, but remained on the job while the investigation continued.
