Recycling company abandons landfill project

RALEIGH (AP) -- A recycling company said today that it has abandoned plans for a facility in the struggling coastal town of Navassa.

That comes as state lawmakers start to move forward with new regulations for the landfill industry.

Navassa Mayor Eulis Willis has said that the Brunswick County town needs the jobs and investments provided by a proposed Sims Hugo Neu landfill. But state lawmakers are considering new regulations to restrict the industries growth in the state.

Sims Hugo Neu President Robert Kelman says the decision to abandon the project was a difficult one.

Lawmakers passed a one-year moratorium on landfills last year to freeze the permitting process on four projects. Environmental leaders say those projects would have made North Carolina the fourth-largest waste-importing state.

Navassa Mayor Eulis Willis said he wanted the chance to line his pockets one more time. R.C. Soles even held his breath when he saw that he lost the opportunity to screw a small black southern community and enrich his election coffers as well. Two birds, one stone. Now Hugo Neu is off taking land from some Louisianna Indians and sowing the toxins in their soil for the future generations down there to deal with.
