Local marchers remember Phillipe McIver

READ MORE: Local March Remembers Phillipe McIver
WILMINGTON -- Religious leaders in the community are calling on the Wilmington Police to thoroughly investigate the death of Phillipe McIver. More than 100 people gathered at the makeshift memorial honoring McIver's memory. Friends, family and community members walked up Princess Place Drive to the memorial. First there was a moment of silence for McIver, followed by a prayer; a prayer that asked for justice to be served. Community members held hands in what participants say was a peaceful protest. "I truly believed that if things stay peaceful that justice will be served," Foris Allen, a Bladen County resident said. Leaders intended the march to be a call for justice. Not only for the memory of Phillipe McIver but for his family also. "We don't want this to be dropped," Aaron Canty, McIver's great uncle said, "In other words, we don't want this to be falling between the cracks." Family members say they aren't angry, but they want more details. "When a police officer is involved in the shooting, enough is not told to the public," Aaron Canty said. Marchers say that Thursday's officer-involved shooting doesn't make them feel any less safe, but they say it does raise a question as to whether excessive force was used on the part of the police. "I feel like the police protect and serve, who they do that to, is a different matter," Aaron Canty said. The State Bureau of Investigation continues to work the case.

What is this?

Just a question please. Why do some of the marchers have their faces covered?

Justice has been served

A criminal is just that... a criminal. If you even try to defend him, with everything that has happened in his past, that means you too are a criminal and have no moral values. People need to be held responsible for their actions and parents need to explain to their children why this happened and how not to be part of it in the future. Like someone else said....people need to stop glorifying criminals and become a productive part of society.

It doesn't matter if u r a

It doesn't matter if u r a criminal or not, no one deserves to take another person's life. Some times in life we stray away from what is "suppose" to be right in life, but Phillipe' did not deserve to have his life taken. All in all the Wilmington Police department did not handle the situation correct. If U feel that it was ok for them to take his life the that is a stupid part of U and I do not want U in my Society.

Hey Auntie Einstein

Does someone have a right to take a life when a criminal has wrestled a firearm away from an officer and starts shooting at him?

That's exactly what happened and you know it. The video tapes don't lie. Your nephew posed an immediate, deadly threat to officers, and Officer Howard did exactly what anyone in his situation should have done - he ended the confrontation. As the old song goes, "Boom-boom, out go the lights."

Tell the rest of your nephews not to shoot at police officers and you'll never lose another one.....well, at least not to police gunfire!

I knew the family of this

I knew the family of this man and if you actually lived in creekwood you would know exactly why he might have done something like this. There is not many men around helping their children and the community but, he wasn't a bad person we all make mistakes. They took a man from the family and they play a valuable part in a family.

I know

He was wacked out on drugs, running around in the street naked. He was able to take an officers weapon and shoot at him. Too bad for McIver the other officer on the scene was a better shot.

But I'm sure he was a good guy, he was somebody's child, I don't know him and I should shut my mouth. Did that cover it?
