Local Radio Host Killed in Plane Crash

Local radio talk show host, Danny Alvis, died Wednesday when his plane crashed. Investigators are still trying to piece together what caused the plane to go down. Alvis, an avid pilot, was on his way to Danville, Va. According to those who worked alongside Alvis at The Big Talker FM in Wilmington, he was a fun and interesting person to be around. “He was just a 24-7 guy. He had a lot of energy. He was a very positive person, in that sense. People were really attracted to him,” Curtis Wright, a fellow talk show host, said. Alvis hosted a financial advice program called “It’s Your Money” on the radio station for about three years. Wright said Alvis was liked by everyone he came in contact with. “People felt good about his personality. He made people feel positive, and he had good relationships with a lot of people,” Wright said. An experienced pilot, Alvis was about 12 miles from his destination in Danville, Va., when his plane crashed. Preliminary reports from the Federal Aviation Administration indicate he was turning to approach the airport when something went wrong. They do not know the exact cause of the accident at this time. Wright said Alvis might have been trying to land his amphibious plane, a Seawind 3000 EXP, in nearby water when he went down. Flying was just one of Alvis’ many loves. “I do know, as was with his race car driving, he was a flying enthusiast. He’s had his pilots license for a while,” Wright said. Alvis brought a positive attitude to all aspects of his life, including his family. “He spoke often on the show about his children and his family, and was very proud of his family,” Wright said. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made public.
