The transition to digital television has technology gurus thinking outside the box. Now, they have come up with an innovative way to allow consumers to get television on the go.

By the end of this year, millions of consumers should be able to watch free, over-the-air television on cell phones, PDAs and other portable digital devices.

The service will be available to 63 stations in 22 cities including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston.

The new portable TVs can receive signals as far as 60 miles from the transmitter and can run up to about four hours before batteries need to be recharged. The mobile receivers will be in stores later this year.
