WILMINGTON -- If a mass shooting can happen on Virginia Tech's campus, could it happen at a college near us?
In 2004, a girl was shot and killed in her UNCW dorm room.
Since then, many safety measures have been put in place, now the college says it is one of the leaders in the country for campus security.
If any emergency happens on UNCW's campus, administrators immediately send out blast e-mail to students and facility.
They also post an alert on the school's website and are now looking into ways to send mass text messages.
UNCW has emergency phones on campus.
There are phones in many halls and classrooms. This way the police can pinpoint exactly where the person is calling from on campus.
Even with these safety standards in place administrators know that they cannot make the student's 100 percent secure.
Cynthia J. Lawson, the assistant to the UNCW Chancellor says, "since this past fall at least 30 students have been denied admission to UNCW because of their background checks obviously prevention is the best medicine."
Campus police say if a shooting does occur on campus they do not immediately go into a lock down.
A lock-down is just one option.
Even though you might think a lock-down is the first step police should take, officials NewsChannel 3 spoke to say sometimes it could actually pose a greater risk to others in the area.

I think security and law enforcement on campus should carry a gun, not only for their protection but the protection of our children. It's about having preventive measures available when needed, not after the fact!
The police on campus do
The police on campus do carry weapons and are held to the same standards as any other police officers in the state. I am not sure but I would think that V-Tech officers would be armed as well.

Lets face it the question is how long before it does.The radical islam terroist have already said they will attack us in our schools and shopping malls and they already have plans in place to do so, yes it will, it just has not yet. that is why we need to PRAY every day for this country and the safety of our families.And another qestion i have is what would stop a terrorist from driving down college rd pulling in to UNCW and blowing up a Hertz Van like they did at the first world trade center attack or Oklahoma city attack??

Yea prayer does everyone a lot of good. Hey maybe if people quit praying so much and start acting than situations like this coukd be avoided. I,m sure god stopped the bullets when the people getting shot asked him to.
