RALEIGH (AP) -- Several colleges in North Carolina are reviewing their security policies.
University officials in North Carolina warned they may never be able to guarantee safety from violence such as what happened at Virginia Tech, where 32 people were killed Monday.
Administrators and security officers from around the state acknowledge that it's nearly impossible to lock down the state's higher education campuses, some of which cater to thousands of students every day. Even small colleges questioned the viability of securing school grounds.
North Carolina's higher education system includes dozens of universities, community colleges and private institutions that serve more than 300-thousand full-time students and many more part-time students.

I have an even better idea, how about psychology test for would be parents. It seems to me that they are the root cause of so many "children with problems"
When U.S. Marines murder 24 innocent women and children in Iraq no one says a word, but when someone murders american children the weeping and wailiing begins. Not to underscore this tragedy but murder is murder in my book ,and a child is a child, regardless of race ,religion ,color or national origin.
Even if you could identify the problem children you would not be able to do anything because the lawsuits alone would break every school systems back in this country. The ACLU would have a field day!No parent wants to hear that their child is a potential problem, most don't even want to hear it after their child is a problem.Just ask any police officer how many parents defend their children even after they have been caught in the commission of a crime.
The sad reality is that the world is just full of sick ,evil people (some even wear american uniforms'and are called the good guys),and all the test in the world will not stop them from harming others.
Criminals are cowards by nature, and always pick the softest target available(with some rare exceptions) Why is it that the overwhelming majority of these shootings take place at schools and not at police stations or even shooting or hunting clubs? Because schools provide a nice soft, target rich enviroment!! Thanks to our wonderfull laws (which the criminals ignore, hench the word criminal) they know they will meet no armed resistence.
Differant
The war is differant than this killer. He was just mentally ill and didn't want to help himself. Who can help others thatn don't have hope. If anyone new of any issues then it starts with trying to get help. The innocent are the ones that pay. No ones perfect and shouldn't be judged not our jobs to do so. The killer was disturbed and jealous of rich kids and not focasing on how he culd better himself he kept focasing on negative thoughts that just get worse, when he should have gathered how he could make his life better and what he seen around him that he wanted for his self. It's sad but true there is alot of people out here in the world like this and hopefully it's a learning experience if anything to help other troubled people to seek counseling and talk theres always someone that will listen. Lifeis what we ake it.... Don't compare..
Response to School Security
You cannot compare what soldiers are going through in Iraq to what happened at Virginia Tech. Unless you have been in a war like VietNam or Iraq where your enemies use women and children as weapons against troops, DO NOT prejudge soldiers to reacting to what they presume to be threats. If you think it is so clear cut, join the military and go over there and see if you can do better! What happened at Virginia Tech was murder, What is happening in Iraq is war. There is a difference!
Response to school security
Ther is no difference!! Those women and children were rounded up like cattle and shot in the back by the Marines, that is murder!!Even the Marine Corp agrees as several Marines have been charged with homicide.
What happened at Virginia Tech was a terrible tragedy committed by a deranged coward, but it is no different from the atrocities committed by American soldiers.
By the way ,I am a former paratrooper and currently a law enforcement officer with a wife in the military and a father that died in Vietnam,I have earned the right to judge.
response to school security
I commend you for being in the service. Still you are missing the point. One situation was committed in a war zone, the other in a learning atmosphere. That is the difference. We put our young soldiers in a environment where they are fighting to stay alive. Not all of them are able to handle that without having adverse effects. This young man was not in a war zone, he had no one trying to kill him. The two situaions should not have been compared.
confuzed
I don't think it's right either to keep showing the same crap on the news about this war...
school security
When a person is full of anger they do not think rationally. No matter what type of security measures are put in place in our childrens schools, they always seem to have a plan to get around it.
Why cant there be a policy for all college students to take a Psychology test as part of the enrollment process? They should even be tested in Elementary Schools. This way we the children with potential problems can be identified. We can help these children prior to any serious problems arising.
I have three children in school and I am terrified of the things that are happening in our society. We need to find an answer now. Too many of our children are dying. And the sad thing is there were clues that the perps in every school shooting had problems and nothing was done.
We need to work together as a nation to save our children. Have ALL kids tested yearly and help those who have have problems. Please.
Psychology testing does not
Psychology testing does not seem to be a reasonable solution to filtering college entrance- nor for progression through the younger grades. On what would you base entrance criteria?
