HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Schools in Huntersville were put on lock-down today after a student pointed a handgun at two students in a parking lot at North Mecklenburg High School.
Police say the student, who attended the school, shot himself in the head when officers confronted him at a nearby gas station.
Captain Michael Kee of the Huntersville Police Department says police erred on the side of caution in locking down the schools in light of the shootings that occurred at Virginia Tech.
The student was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with a serious injury.
Also Wednesday, five schools in the Cabarrus County schools were put under lock-down while police in Concord searched for a man wanted on charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
