Study rates job satisfaction

WILMINGTON -- Mick Jagger couldn't get any, but can you? Workers are rating their occupations on the satisfaction scale. It's a new study that reveals just how happy employees are at their jobs. And you may be surprised to know who tops the list. Are you happy to get up and go to work every day? According to a new study, there are a few occupations that make days a little brighter. Firefighter Kenny Altman said, "It's the best job in the world." Wilmington firefighters work grueling schedules, yet this bunch says they love their job. Firefighter Ryan Young said, "You never know what the new day holds." The department responds to about 20-30 calls a day, responsible for anything from car wrecks to fires. Young said, "When you do put out a fire or you go to a car wreck and you pull those people out it's just satisfying that you know you did a job." Altman said, "Knowing that you're helping people, it's just satisfying knowing that when you left you made a difference in someone's life and actually changed something." But firefighting isn't the only gig in town that's satisfying its workers. Supervising or administrative positions, teaching, even writing is high on the satisfaction scale. But the job that tops this list is ministering to the religious needs of the community. First Presbyterian Church pastor Charlie Lee said, "Where you are passionate about spreading God's word, spreading the gospel and seeing that take root in people's lives, that is just so fulfilling. And you can see God's work in you and in people around you." On the flip side, there are jobs that aren't quite as appeasing like sales, bar tending and waiting tables. And according to this list, the least satisfying job of all is manual labor. Coincidentally, some of these also happen to be some of the hardest jobs to fill.
