State Senator Julia Boseman upped the ante Thursday in the move to block Titan from building a cement plant near Wilmington. Her bill would put a moratorium on all cement plants in North Carolina. It would also require a study of various issues surrounding those plants.
Boseman has been a vocal opponent to the proposed Titan Cement Plant in Castle Hayne.
Bob Odom, general manager of Carolina's Cement, Titan's local subsidiary, said they are disappointed and concerned about the bill.
A group of local business leaders who support the plant also released a statement, calling Boseman's legislation unconstitutional.

how everyone is concerned about titan but noone is a bit concerned about your power plant that burns more coal then anyone else in the area. The country is in the state it is in now because folks cannot do their own research and make their own determinations on issues but follow misinformation like it is the gospel.

Since they OBVIOUSLY are much better informed than the EPA and the NCDHNR, we can abolish those know-nothing, do-nothing agencies and save countless billions of dollars fro the federal and state budgets. Titan Plant
I applaud Julia Boseman for taking a stand to protect our precious environment. We need more political leaders that can have a backbone to stand up for what is right instead of thinking about who can make money now. The other plants that line Hwy421 have been slowly polluting our environment for years. My dad retired from a plant on 421 & years ago it produced asbestos which many of its former employees have died from asbestos exposure & my dad has been diagnosed with lung disease from the exposure-never smoked, rarely drank, worked, provided for his family & didn't hang out at bars. Knowing about this now doesn't make his 30yrs at this plant worth it. We don't have the plentiful resources available in our country to investigate properly to make sure they have our best interests at heart. So Julia you keep working to protect our environment & our health because the alternative is more costly in the long run. I want to see more environmentally sound companies doing business in our area which will be better for us in the long run & healthier. Also I see "Help Wanted" signs everyday in this county but very few want to accept a job earning less than $25k annually with little to no benefits-they'd rather file for bankruptcy. I know I work for a bankruptcy attorney-a large majority of the folks who file through our office come from the the high dollar homes/cars/jewels/major credit debt, etc, people just trying to hang on to stuff.

Have any of you ever set foot on the old existing Ideal Concrete site that Titan plans to clean-up and then build on? Because if you had, you would see that all of your concerns you are worried about is already there on the site except JOBS!! You run Titan off, then we, the tax payers, will have to clean-up that nasty mess and loose the high paying jobs and added tax base we so badly need...........

Ummmm. Is there something wrong with our government cleaning up an environmental mess? I would much prefer that the industry do it, but if not, should we just let it sit there? Also, what's so wrong with making sure someone else doesn't make the same mess once it is cleaned up?
Also, take a minute to look around. NH County is completely built out. We are pretty much out of land here. How will this cement plant help us? It won't.
The reason our COUNTRY got in this current mess is because big business has been allowed to write the rules and do anything it wants. This promise of "high paying jobs" and "increased tax base" is bogus. The taxes will be paid by the employees and the big business will lobby for more tax breaks and will avoid its responsiblity, as usual. And once again, the burden of this big business will trickle all the way down to us - the citizens who have to come in later and clean up the mess - while the folks who made millions on the deal skate away to spend their money.

I applaud Senator Boseman's courage and conviction in introducing this legislation, and hope that it is successful. I wish those writing comments would stop the name calling and become educated on this issue. Are you really willing to put the health of our citizens at risk for a small amount of low paying jobs? Yes, the unemployment rate is high; and yes, we are in a difficult place, but we will come out of this a stronger and better people. Titan and the local business people who support this project, do NOT have our best interest a heart. They are thinking with their own pocket books and private interests.

When you're out of money and need something to eat, go on down to the fishin' hole and catch a nice flounder full of mercury if any are left by that time. Take a big ole' swig of water that's not fit for consumption by anything or anyone.
Titan will provide a few jobs now and a lot more later, trying to clean up after them when our limestone (natural water filter) has has been mined and depleted in this area. So when you get home and clean the cement dust off your cloths and your children and grandchildren start having health problems due to this destructive poison plant, tell em it will be ok and to go play outside on the cement driveway and take another deep breath of more particulates floating around.

I am one of "those children"....my father worked at Ideal cement for over 20 years! We lived 9 miles away from the cement plant, we swam in the river, we caught fish out of the river and we ate them! Not one single person in our family has had ANY ill side affects, sickness, or disability's. The rules now are more strict and will protect the enviroment even more than they did years ago. We need these jobs so family members do not have to move away from Wilmington in search of better paying jobs.

At a time when our unemployment has topped 10%, these leftists are doing all they can to work against better paying jobs in the state. It's not just the education field, girls. This move makes no economic sense whatsoever. The increased costs alone is construction projects due to having no local sources for cement will be staggering. If this plant satisfies the EPA standards, then it should be allowed. I thought Ms. Boseman was elected to benefit the community. Does she not consider additional jobs in a county with a 10% unemployment rate a benefit?

I have blog on this a couple of times about this same topic. I am shock that this still a issue. Show me the facts. Show me where these other plants are and what impact they have had on their community. Have there been any fact shown where they are not good for the community. The EPA, OSHA, Air Quailty Control, Permits, Where is on record that there is a problem. This company was invite and done everything they can to prove they are good. I don't think Boseman is any position to judge. We have got to have jobs back. Why can't anybody see this. Go on 421 any given day and look at the plants out there and then come on here and tell me there isn't problems with the enviroment. If you need examples, D.H.Griffin, (air), Horton, GE, Waste Industries, why isn't some one check the records on these companies. GET THE FACT JULIA AND ALL THE OTHERS DO GOODERS out there then take up TV and news paper time up. With the facts. Not just say they are " bad for the enviroment."

BASF shutting down, Georgia-Pacific closing, NC unemployment over 10% and now Boseman is trying to axe any new jobs for the area. Forget about the small environmental impacts of the plant and help make new jobs so that we dont lose our homes. Argh!
