It's the law when you're driving in your vehicle, now it's the law in your boat, too. If you see or hear law enforcement when you're on the water you must slow down and pull over.
Boaters approaching within 100 feet of a law enforcement vessel displaying flashing blue lights must slow down to a no-wake speed and be careful when passing.
In narrow channels, the distance becomes within 50 feet of the law enforcement vessel.
Wildlife officials say the new law is for the safety of the public and the boaters.
N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Sgt. David Jordan said, "As they're getting checked by us on the waterway, other boaters come by without any respect for us. And the other boaters throwing up wake can cause the boats to crash together, causing damage to the boats and causing people to slip and fall."
If you break this new law you can be fined up to $250 and court costs.
