Archaeologists are hoping to unearth what lies beneath a historic Brunswick County site.

They are excavating the Fort Anderson State Historic Site in Brunswick Town. The work comes after archaeologists discovered grave sites on the grounds with the help of a radar ground scan last July.

The excavation on Battery B will also uncover details about the construction of the fort.

Fort Anderson was one of the largest Civil War earthworks constructed on the Cape Fear River.
