Storm-spilled packing foam washes ashore along N.C. coast

CAPE LOOKOUT, N.C. (AP) -- Packing foam has washed ashore along the North Carolina coast and a marine biologist fears it could be a threat to animals.

The foam was swept overboard from a cargo ship during a storm.

UNC-Wilmington professor Lawrence Cahoon says as the foam breaks into smaller pieces, it could block movement of food through birds and turtles who eat it.

The Coast Guard says the ship lost 21 containers of cargo Sunday while traveling from Georgia to Virginia. There's debris from Cape Lookout to the Virginia border.

None of the lost cargo was listed as hazardous material
