WILMINGTON -- At Cape Fear Community College Friday night one Wilmington mom got an early and very special Mother's Day gift. She received her degree along with her son. Mother's Day weekend happens once a year. For mom Tina Carter and her son Josh this one is once in a lifetime. Tina said, "We kind of picked each other's brains on papers. Critiqued each other's papers." When would you see a mother and son in matching gowns? But Tina and Josh got their degrees on the same night from Cape Fear Community College, just in different ceremonies. First Tina watched her son walk across the stage and get his associate in arts degree. Then it was Josh's turn to watch his mom get her degree in occupational therapy. Josh said, "It was exciting walking across for myself, but I'm more excited for her." Tina is 50 and says she put college on hold to start a family. She says going back to school is something anyone can do. Being a mom made her do it better. Tina said, "You just learn to be a little more organized, take it more seriously. That's the benefit of going back at an older age." She did such a good job that she's a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Tina says her graduation day ranks in the top five days of her life. That's because she can share it with her son, not only as his mom, but also as a fellow graduate. Josh said, "She's a great mom. She's always been supportive and always been there for me. I got the greatest mom in the world." Josh says this was only one part of his mother's day gift. He had something else planned for Sunday, but that was a secret.
