N.C. elections board building flooded by heavy rains

RALEIGH (AP) -- State Board of Elections workers spent today mopping up after heavy weekend rains flooded portions of their downtown building.

Dozens of fans were blowing to dry wet carpet near the front desk, board room and information technology sections of the board's office. State elections director Gary Bartlett says rainfall combined with runoff from construction uphill from the building left a mess in the office parking lot.

Bartlett says the flooding damaged some old campaign reports and petitions that had been stored at the office, but it wasn't immediately clear how extensive the document damage was. Board workers would examine them more closely after the board completes an investigative hearing this week into two House members.

The hearing was scheduled to be held Tuesday at a Raleigh hotel and Wednesday and Thursday in the board room. Bartlett is looking for a different location starting Wednesday.
