Two construction companies must pay more than $9,000 in fines for the death of a man during construction of the new Oak Island Bridge.
The state Labor Department fined Lee Construction $6,300 for four serious violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Barnhill Contracting was fined $2,800 for one serious violation.
The beam collapse in December killed worker Jose Montalvo.

What a small fine for companies who break safty rules. Nascar drivers are fined more for cheating. North Carolina's safty inforcement is subpar at best. Companies work around worker comp. laws by delaying and not following the laws. They can not be sued by an employee. The laws need to be reformed to protect workers and close these loop holes that company lawyers love so much.
