NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- History was made Thursday night at Wilmington's historic courthouse. Phyllis Gorham was sworn in as a superior court judge for the fifth judicial district. That includes New Hanover and Pender Counties. Judge Gorham is the first woman to be appointed to this superior court. Surrounded by family and friends as she took her oath, the judge says she's proud to be a part of history. Gov. Easley appointed Gorham to the superior court seat vacated by Judge Ernest B. Fullwood who retired in December. Gorham spent a number of years in the DA's office and most recently served as a district court judge.
