SOUTHPORT -- She says a pharmacy foul-up is causing her to go blind. Now a Southport woman is taking on a big business.
For three straight days Gracie page has affixed herself to a sign of protest.
She says it's time the little people stand up to big corporations.
Page said, "You can't knock the little fellow down and keep going."
Page's problems with Wal-Mart arose nearly three years ago. She said, "Wal-Mart pharmacist filled my prescription wrong. They gave me ten times the dosage of what I was supposed to have. The error wasn't caught for ten months."
She now suffers from a myriad of health problems, including complications with her eyes. She says the pills have brought on cataracts.
Page said, "I've got deteriorating bones from it. I'm losing my eyesight. I don't want to lose my sight. That is so scary."
Neither store personnel, nor representatives from Wal-Mart's media hotline were available for comment. Although this matter is now in corporate hands and the two
sides are trying to reach an agreement, Page says the compensation just isn't enough.
Page said, "They've offered me $3,500 in compensation. The eye
surgery is going to be about $14,000."
According to Page, Wal-Mart has said the matter is nothing personal, it's just business. She doesn't agree.
"Well this is personal, it's my health. It's my eyesight. If I lose my eyesight I'm not going to be able to do my job."
And Page says she's willing to stay out her as long as it takes.
"If I have too, if I go blind, I'll stay out here with a seeing eye dog."
Page says her faith has helped her through this ordeal and that the man upstairs will see to it things work out.

WALMART MED ERROR
Whatever happened to personal responsibility? Why would you not check on your own end what medication and dosage you are taking? And, I wonder why it would take 10 months to figure out there is a problem with your meds. This woman, although I feel sorry for her, is just as responsible as Walmart for this error. I would not 'blindly' put my trust in anyone regarding my health. People are people, and subject to mistakes.
Hmmm..
Personal responsibility? Pharmacists are supposed to KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. I bet I could go to the pharmacy right now, pick out 5 common drugs and you wouldn't know what ones what! The responsibility here lies SQUARELY on the pharmacist that put the medicine in the bottle. I cannot remember a SINGLE TIME that I looked at the numbers on a pill, IF they had one, to see the strength of the meds I was prescribed. Not only that...like I said there is NO WAY to know what you got because the names of meds aren't on the pill. I am ALL for personal responsibility, but this is a situation where it is a pharmacists fault and WalMart should pony up!
prescriptions
My Dr. always tells me what she is giving me and explains what it does, when I am handed the prescription paper I read it and check to see if it is what she explained to me (milligrams etc.). I take it to the pharmacy... when I get the bottle I read it, the bottle also tells you what the pill should look like (mine does)......Ok, it is called personal responsibility.
I am not defending Wal-mart. Its not like they cant afford to pay her. They will have their high priced lawyers in court forever on this. The lady will be long gone before they settle.
Hmmm
Very few doctors take time to explain anything. I am on so many medications, I have to trust the pharmacists. It would help if Dr's whould write legibly as that is whay almost caused me to get a totally wrong medication.
Wal-Mart Pharmacy foul up
No, people aren't people and make mistakes, they should always double check their work and if you can't trust these people and doctors who do you trust. Grant it,yes you should double check but if you don't know what the heck the doctor wrote how would you know?
Just another reason......
This is just another of many reasons to avoid Wal-Mart. Take your prescriptions and go to an independent pharmacy where the pharmacists and techs know you by name, not as just another dollar in the chain stores. Having a personal realtionship with your pharmacist and techs are of great value and this problem would have been caught very quickly and avoided. DO NOT think for one second you are getting a deal at these chain stores....many, many, many generic drugs cost less than what these stores charge you. These money-grubbers want you to think a $4.00 script is a deal for you....think again....you can get the same script filled and a real drug store for the same price, plus get personalized service. Do the Mom'n'Pop stores a favor and give them your business, after all, they appreciate you and you are a real person not just a number with a dollar.
