Some resdients disappointed after Burgaw annexation public meeting

Burgaw Town Commissioners heard from Pender County residents tonight about the proposed annexation... and they got an earful.

The town of Burgaw wants to expand but most of the people at the town meeting say they don't want to be a part of the growth. Burgaw is considering annexing a 750-acre area outside of town. The proposed annexation is involuntary meaning the town is suggesting it. One local says officials aren't listening.

"It was just a meeting. They have already made up their minds what they're going to do and that's that," Joyce Bowman a life-long Pender County resident.

Town leaders say this expansion will help clean up ragged edges of the town's border.

"They're going to make it part of the city and give us nil, nothing," Bowman said.

For those living in the area that could be annexed without their approval, the proposal would mean paying town taxes.

"Taxation without representation. They make the rules, you either put up or shut up..and I don't like it," Barbara Campbell-Addison said.

Town officials say the benefit of becoming part of Burgaw would be water and sewer service, street lights and police and fire protection.

The annexation may not happen 750 acres at a time. It could be annexed piece by piece.
Town Commissioners say they will review residents' feedback from tonight's meeting.

'....and provide services to people who need them.' (????)

That's a quote from the Channel 3 poll, and it clearly indicates how hypnotized we have become.

Who is the government to tell me what I "need?" I have a deep well that provides clean, cool water. I have a septic tank that disposes of waste just fine. The sheriff is available if I encounter a situation I can't handle, and the local volunteer fire department does a fine job.

What kind of mind numbing drug is leading Americans to sit back and accept the perverted idea that WE don't tell the government what we want, rather that the government is here to run every single aspect of our lives? From North Carolina (and only ONE other state, New Mexico) allowing forced annexation without a vote, to a Supreme Court that allows property to be taken for private use, we are surrendering more and more of our liberty every day.

I don't require the government to tell me what I need. I don't want some busy-body, self-appointed experts telling me what I can eat. I can manage my own health care without Clinton and Edwards creating some Socilaist Utopia that sweeps Capitalism and free enterprise out the door.

I have free will and discipline. I can manage my own life, thank you, and as long as my actions do not impact you, please mind your own business and stay out of mine.

This country was built by people who believed in individual responsibility, self-reliance, and working for a common good. We seem to have lost sight of the first two. We're supposed to be a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people." WE are supposed to be telling government what we need and want, not the other way around.

I believe it was Jefferson who is credited with the quote we should all think about a lot more - "The government that governs best, governs least."
