NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- Three people were injured when the boat they were in crashed into the Figure Eight Island Bridge.
The accident happened around 10 Monday night. One of those people is still in the hospital.
The accident involved a 24-foot Hydra-sport boat. A spokesperson for the North Carolina Wildlife Enforcement, who is investigating the case, says the boat belongs to one of the three injured people.
He and a female passenger have been released from New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
The third passenger, a man, is still in the hospital.
Malia Lehrer's family lives at the entrance of the island. She said, "We were saying, 'how could anyone hit the bridge?' I mean, it's kind of a fixture of our lives. It's pretty tall, it's very lit up and so we were a little shocked to think there could be something, a crash that big, that close to our house."
The three people on-board are not from Figure Eight Island, but all live in New Hanover County.
There's no word yet on whether alcohol was a factor.
Investigators say they'll have a better idea within the next few days.

I can hear it now: "Mr.
I can hear it now:
"Mr. Osifer. I was just riding in my boat and this bridge jumped out in front of me."
You all need to get off of
You all need to get off of your high horses! I don't know how many of us have actually crashed into a bridge before but we have ALL made bad judgement calls on issues in our lives. How many of you have had a few drinks, put the keys in your ignition, and drove home? Chances are that most of you bashing other people have. Just because you weren't inovolved in an accident when you chose to drive makes it ok that you did? Get rid of your halos people! (especially when you DON'T even know the facts!)
guest 22..
Since you seem to know more about this than we all do, How about you give us the facts then. Is your halo bright tonight?
Well Said! Bravo!
Well Said! Bravo!
Enough already!
Lets hope these 3 fine people recover from their injury. I'm sure the one to blame (if so) will be held accountable, and the wrong will be righted.
End of discussion.
Move along... nothing to see here..

The facts are pretty
The facts are pretty straight forward. You are not being quick to judge if the writing is on the wall. Anyone who knows this person knows the truth.
Poor Trib. Yeah, the writing
Poor Trib.
Yeah, the writing is on the wall (or bridge.)
HA!
Fact check.
Its Trip not Trib. DOY! I'm sure glad everyone around here has all the facts straight...
Face it, if you weren't there, you haven't a clue as to what happened and why.
So get a grip, crap happens. Like no one reading this every had some crap happen to them, whether they personally were in the right or wrong?
We should be glad no serious injury occurred, and take steps to make sure things like this don't occur when it is in OUR control to do so.
And thats a FACT JACK!
Here's another fact
The area one-half mile North and South of this bridge is posted as a No Wake Zone so no one, regardless of how blind drunk or high they were, should have had a bridge jump out in front of them.
Of course, it's a Corp of Engineers designated no wake zone which for some reason NC Wildlife and NC Fisheries do not enforce, but anyone who passes through that area knows that with the Figure Eight Island marina emptying just North of the bridge, it's no area to go hot-rodding.
The captain is ultimately responsible for the safe operation of his vessel. Whether he was drunk, loaded, or simply careless, there's ONE person to blame. "Crap happens" a lot to some people, because they stink at managing their life.
judgement
How we quick we are to judge....
Couldn't cross the bridge
I guess security wouldn't let them cross over the bridge so they tried to board it.
stupidity
While alcohol was highly likely to be in the system of the driver of the boat, i don't think i would go as far as to say it was a factor of the crash. I dont care how drunk you are, you have to be extremely stupid to run into a bridge that is lit up and has a wooden pier/fence to help boats stay in the channel. stupidity is the only reason this boat crashed. and who drives fast enough at night in their boat to do something like this? their boat needs to be confiscated by the state and sold at an auction.
Hit a bridge?
10pm at night can make things a little foggy on the water. I have had problems staying in the channel in a small boat, but that is why you go slower when it's night-time.
I have a suspicious feeling alcohol or drugs were involved. But just mulling a point... Do the new laws pertain to the operation of a craft on water as a "vehicle being operated" by someone affected by drugs/alcohol, and does the injuries automatically up the charges against the person operating said vessel?
Alcohol? Maybe.
Stupidity? Definitely!
Alcohol not yet ruled in as a factor...
Either alcohol played a part in this or just plain stupidity. If there was no alcohol involved, it just proves that there should be a boaters' safety course completion required by all operators of recreational vessels. Especially due to the crowding that our waterways have experienced in recent years, not just our sewer system.

boating accicdent
Having a saftey course, would not help being stupid, how many accidents by motor vehiclies,we take test's for that.
