Wilmington woman demands refund from Post Office

READ MORE:
WILMINGTON -- A Wilmington woman wants a refund from the Post Office. Elizabeth Todd recently mailed some medicine to her son and paid a premium for Priority Mail. The Wilmington postal clerk told her the package would get to her son in nearby Clayton in 2-3 days, but it took 10. And when Elizabeth complained, Post Office workers said "too bad." It's one of the cheapest ways out there to send someone a package quickly. Priority Mail prices start at just $4.05. But many consumers have learned the hard way: there's no guarantee your package will reach its destination, much less, reach it on time. Mrs. Todd said, "I just felt like I had been taken." Elizabeth Todd's son forgot his medicine at her house when he came for a visit. She tried to mail it to him in a hurry, paying extra for Priority Mail. But well after the 2-3 day estimated delivery time he package had yet to arrive. Mrs. Todd made three trips to the Post Office to complain, and she also filled out a claim for lost mail. Finally, on the tenth day, the package showed up at her son's house a few counties away. Elizabeth is still upset, though, saying she didn't get the speedy service she paid for. "I want my money back. I said it may not be a lot of money, but I can spend it as good as the Post Office can," Mrs. Todd said. You can purchase insurance from the Post Office in the event they lose your package, but the USPS doesn't have any money-back guarantee that Priority Mail will arrive on time. To get that you'd have to pay for Express Mail. Prices start at $14.40. The private sector mail competitors do guarantee their services on-time or your money back and they're cheaper than you might think. If Mrs. Todd had mailed her package Federal Express ground it would have only cost $5.55 and it would have been guaranteed to make it from Wilmington to Clayton in one business day. UPS ground would have guaranteed it's arrival just as quickly, but would have charged a little more -- $7.38.

What the....

Um....How is this news?

Late mail

I have learned the hard way. I have sent packages to my mother in Clemmons, NC and paid priority rate and they have dissapeared into the great post office void. I have called the Southport post office, I have gone into the post office and complained and I get the same thing you did; "too bad". I went on line and filled out a complaint and finally got a call from the post master, naturally I was out and he left his name and number, but every time I called back I was told "he is on the other line" or "he is not in" or the best "we will have him call you back" then they hang up with out taking my information. I have "lost" more money and property through the Southport post office than I care to add up. Good luck cause you will need it dealing with that bunch of rejects.

Yep

Yep, that is correct. Priority mail is not guaranteed, but is usually delivered in 2 to 3 days. You never hear about the ones that are delivered in less time than that, and millions are. It is a fact that some get misdirected and don't make it on time, and you can bet you will definately hear about those. Yes, UPS and FedEx will deliver for a little more and guarantee it to be delivered on time, but I didn't see in the story if this package went to a mail box or to a post office box. UPS and FedEx do not deliver to post office boxes no matter how much you pay, they don't hold or forward any packages either, the postal service does this for no extra charge. Isn't it convenient that no one ever mentions how many packages the postal service delivers for UPS? When you pay more to mail a package by UPS, it may very well be delivered by the local mail carrier from the postal service. UPS does not deliver every package they accept from their customers. But from the sound of this story, I guess those packages they don't deliver are the ones that do not make it on time.

Delivery

That is why they call it snail's Mail. They wonder why they are losing money. Anything that has US in the name and run by the goverment is a waste of money. Just watch the Health care..
