What do you think about the idea of building a baseball stadium in Wilmington?

It's a home run, so the city should pay for it

Private funding for PRIVATE

Private funding for PRIVATE profit! Preposterous!!!

Not with my tax money, if

Not with my tax money, if it's such a good idea fund it privately

Wow

It's mind boggling that a tax increase is even being considered for this ballpark.

YES YES

This is a job creator, and a revenue maker!
Forget all the complainers and give the downtown a WONDERFUL pastime.

Future season ticket holder, cheering for any team playing the braves.
BRING IT ON.

you're kidding yourself

check out things like Qualcomm stadium. The Chargers pay the city 2.5 million dollars a year in rent yet the city LOSES $17.1 million dollars per year on it. That's for a Major League Football team AND they're paying rent. There have been large scale studies done on the impact of building stadiums for professional teams and their economic impact on a city (Baade and Matheson, Sigfried & Zimbalist, etc) that found that in nearly every case (and during a good economy I might add) it was a losing proposition for the city and sometimes to the tune of several million dollars per year.
The economic impact is WAY overinflated. Sure some people might spend money on going to a baseball game. However, they get that money from somewhere and it's almost always at the expense of spending it at another local business. I think you'd be hard pressed to find many local businesses that would be tickled to lose a revenue stream right now.
It will add to congestion and parking woes for the restaurants and music establishments downtown on game nights. People are going to eat hot dogs at the game, not go eat at a nice restaurant and sit in a stadium for 3 hours. Meanwhile, others will avoid the downtown area and its businesses on game nights due to the lack of parking and congestion.
Don't even get me started on the crime aspect.
This is a BAD deal for the citizens of Wilmington and they need to be screaming mad.

Traffic is bad enough as it

Traffic is bad enough as it is! How on earth are we going to drive through town with game traffic backed up for miles? Terrible, terrible idea!

I can't belive we are

I can't belive we are getting a baseball stadium at tax payers expense. You have people here can't pay their taxes and water bill now and now adding another burden. This let me know our mayor and county commissioners care nothing about the people in this community. Its a good idea for them they have money how about the less fortunate. How come they want come up with ways to help people pay their taxes and water bill. They forgot some people wages are way behind the average. They rather see people put out their home and live in humane condition because they cannot pay their water bill. Just like the water situation, they got two rasies in one year and was going for another raise the first of this year. But its been delayed. I think the reason why the govenment dont say anything about companies hosing the public because they get you first.

You said it far better than

You said it far better than anyone, sNOOKIE1! If only our elected officials could see it that way. Fix what's broke first!!!

No way! Wilmington is a

No way! Wilmington is a great place but already can't accommodate the amount of traffic we have here NOW. Having a stadium like that would only make it worse.

Minor League Baseball great for area

Mandalay is a great company to bring Baseball the area. Erie, Pa which is in one of the most depressed areas in the country. Build a beautiful stadium for their team The Erie Seawolves. Which is owned by Mandalay. The team generates a ton of cash for the city of Erie. Erie is about the same size as Wilmington. Plus, theplay shorter season because of weather. If the city build it, it will recoup all plus more really quick. Plus, with an organization like Atlanta Braves involved you can't go wrong. Build it...

BB Stadium/Minor League Team

Wilmington decision makers are REALLY walking on the razor's edge with their credibility this time. Two previous failed attempts at a minor league BB team- check. Convention center failure- check. MANY sewage spills over the million gallon mark-check. Diminished water quality- check. Diminished air quality- check. Oh yeah- attempts to bring a pollution laden industry into the area with underhanded tactics- check. Taxpayer frustration and distrust of the current city and county decision makers- double check.

Good grief- what back room deals are being made now--hmmmm- could could it possibly have something to do with a new bank, real estate, anchor hotel and convention center?

Stop the Madness

Isn't it bad enough that the city doesn't have enough money from taxpayers so Saffo & his cohorts keep trying to force annex areas that are serviced by NHC and WAY beyond what should be city limits? Now, they want to bring a BB team/stadium here at taxpayers expense. Is that more important than the city's crumbling infrastructure or the dwindling bank accounts of its citizens? NOW IS NOT THE TIME!

Since when did the city have

Since when did the city have SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much extra money???????? It must be from constantly raising property taxes, not giving police, fire or city workers a raise for the past 5 years ( although the council has no problems taking any extra trips all over the country) adn not repairing streets, water adn sewer lines, leveling out property taxes instead of increasingt them at a rate much higher than anyones wages are going up. If its such a great business descision.let he private sector take the risks. I dont trust the concil with such descisions since they cannot seem the simplest task of balancing a check book.

City workers got a pay

City workers got a pay increase in January, 2009, and received a $1000 bonus for each employee in December, 2011!

Wrong

City workers didn't receive a pay increase in January, 2009. You must be thinking about county employees, who received a 1% increase. Also, the 1,000 bonus for city employees actually only amounted to about $600, after taxes, retirement, etc., were taken out of it.

If the City of Wilmington

If the City of Wilmington has so much money that they can build a stadium then why are their roads so lousy. I ventured into town yesterday for my daughter's dental appointment. We had some time to kill so we rode around a little bit and the roads were terrible. I think that Wilmington has better things to do with taxpayers' money than building a stadium.

If it's such a great idea

If it's such a great idea and would be a lucrative venture the taxpayer would be the last person to pay the bill. If it turns a profit they can find independent funding, not tax money. I enjoy the baseball games at legion stadium, we don't need another baseball field.

Stadium

"If you build it, they will come"... I believe it. Great idea for Wilmington, looking forward to it!

Stadium

This is a great Idea. It would be a feather in this great community's cap.Great Location, a boost to the local economy Please make the right decision. Yours truly, future season ticket holder TJK
