One day after remembering 9/11 comes good news about security for our ports.
The Port of Morehead City Wednesday received $1.48 million of federal money.
Congressman Mike McIntyre was on hand to usher in the new security improvements.
The money will go towards a port-wide vulnerability assessment for major ports and nuclear plants.
Also, a new command and control center for the Port of Wilmington and an underwater IED detection system for Port Morehead City.
With the threat of both natural and man-made disasters McIntyre says he can't think of a better use of tax dollars.
Rep. McIntyre said, "It's going to be something to benefit the entire region in so many ways -- from a terrorists attack, but also other potential natural disasters that face our area. It's an exciting time and potential way that everybody benefits with our tax dollars to protect all of our citizens"
Attendees had a chance to explore security equipment purchased be previous grants.
This grant brings the grand total awarded to the ports authority since 9/11 to more than 9 million.
